Reticle Focal Plane (Second Focal Plane vs First Focal Plane) All riflescope reticles can be termed either first focal plane (FFP) or second focal plane (SFP), with respect to the reticle’s location within the optical system. An SFP reticle is visually consistent in size and weight across the magnification range; however, the subtension values are only accurate on one magnification, typically the highest.
