Travelers typically embarked on a circuit through major European cities such as Paris, France. The Palais Royal was not only the historical and cultural center of Paris, but also housed boutiques where visitors could find unique items that served as treasured mementos of their travels. Today, these 18th-century antique pieces evoke a timeless sense of bygone nostalgia from the Grand Tour era and are still sought after by discerning collectors. French pastries were an art form, and an absolute must for travelers to sample a French pastry delicacy. Classic French pastry such as Mouches à la Reine and Pate a la Rose pastry delicacies gained popularity during the 18th century, was served in the Palais Royal French Royal Court, and was a favorite dessert among the aristocracy at elegant banquets and soirées. This handmade mushroom shaped piece has a domed top that is about 2 5/8” in diameter and tapers towards the 1 7/8 “diameter base. Weight is 3.5 ounces or 99 grams. The base is made from copper and fired in a kiln before and after the hand painted floral patterns of a red Rose and yellow & blue flowers with leaves motif on the front and blue and yellow flowers on back side. The top of the base and the loop holding the domed top both have 3 grooved copper rings and a 3-prong hinge at the rear with a Fleur de Lis’ front lid closure.
